Sorry—they are apparently pretty disgusting at the microscopic level.  Seriously, though, listeria cases are incredibly rare in the US and don’t usually make healthy adults very sick anyway.  But listeria can cross the placenta and be fatal to a fetus, so it’s a much bigger deal for pregnant people (although the total number of cases is still very small).
