I recycled a big stack of pornography today. It took me days to work up to it, not because I wanted to keep the porn—honestly, it wasn’t that great and I have a netbook so what do I need with analog porn anyway—but because I kept thinking of all the teenagers who would KILL for a big stack of easily concealed, always accessible porn.
I wished that I could donate it to them. But obviously that is not possible.
So sad.

I present for your viewing pleasure Sofonisba Anguissola, a female painter of the Italian High Renaissance. Her family was peculiar in the fact that all of the daughters (6 of them) received humanist education and all pursued their own interests. While some of them eventually married and dropped what they were doing, Sofonisba pressed on, even after marriage (in fact, her husband was purportedly supportive of her painting). She was so talented that even Michelangelo and Vasari were forced to admit her skill. Visari said of her work, “[she] has shown greater application and better grace than any other woman of our age in her endeavors at drawing; she has thus succeeded not only in drawing, coloring and painting from nature, and copying excellently from others, but by herself has created rare and very beautiful paintings.”
This woman, at a tremendous disadvantage learning human anatomy because of the times and her sex, and living in a time where women were generally dismissed, made one of the greatest artists in the world and the first art historian acknowledge her skill. This lady kicked some serious ass and she’s definitely one of my history crushes.
Pioneer of informal portraiture (which was how she got around being disallowed from viewing nudes and full human figures). Trained via correspondence with Michelangelo, who greatly respected her abilities. At twenty-seven became a court portraitist in Philip II’s Spain. Gave advice to Anthony Van Dyck during her later years as a highly-sought-out teacher.
She was an amazing woman and I wish more people knew about her.

Well as you can see, I tried to make this easier to read and then gave up. Anyways. Yeah. America and Australia are the only countries on the list without mandated paid maternity leave. (I notice North Korea isn’t on there — we probably don’t have access to that information given that it’s North Korea and everything. Anyone know?)
In America, we have the PDL and the FMLA.
PDL. Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL) which entitles you up to four months of unpaid, job-protected leave when disabled by pregnancy, childbirth, or a related medical condition.
FMLA. Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) if you have been employed with the Company for at least one year, provides up to 12 weeks job protected leave.
So you get a few unpaid months off if you gave birth, and they can’t legally hire someone to replace you. But that’s about it. Shameful, America.

Just a note about FMLA: You have to be employed full-time, and the company has to have 50 or more employees. Otherwise, you have no rights at all. Which is why graduate assistants, hourly workers, small business employees, and others don’t get maternity leave.
I had never heard of “Pregnancy Disability Leave.” As best as I can tell, it refers to short-term disability leave used specifically for pregnancy-related conditions, which means that it is not available in all states and if used, it runs concurrently with FMLA leave (the only difference being that short-term disability does offer a reduced rate of pay).
And, unlike bullying that “Weird kid”, this isn’t as socially acceptable as it used to be. That’s why we’ll never get an admittance that he’s autistic.
Yup. And they’ve pretty much forced him into every autistic stereotype there…
I hate big bang theory. I always feel like they’re making fun of me, personally. Because I’m a nerd, or because I’m super-awkward or why, I don’t know. it’s painful and awkward to watch. And yes, i feel in general the characters on Community are drawn better—they’re more real to me. There’s just something so… MEAN about BBT, y’know?
My spouse is a physicist, and he hates it, too. I stopped watching after the first season mainly because of gender stuff, but I agree—it is mean.
