but in light of the recent celebration of him as a Wonderful Activist (due to his receiving some award or other), I believe it’s important to call him out on his various isms. I’ve actually seen someone say that no-one deserved that award as much as Savage did, and well, that’s just plain wrong.
I do recognise the good things he’s done. Apparently he often gives good advice in his...

What’s wrong with Dan?

Call for submissions: Anthology Of South Asian Queer Erotica [title forthcoming]
The spaces for expressing queer concerns have increased across South Asia in the last decade. Much is being written about sexuality, rights and queer lives. Yet, in all of this, sex itself doesn’t get written about very much and there is a dearth of queer erotica from South Asia. Contemporary queer...

missgreyday:
During his six-year term on the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, Chairman Arlan Melendez of the Reno Sparks Indian Colony saw more than his share of racism, discrimination and hate crimes against Native Americans.
But even he was surprised by the vicious attacks by skinheads against one of his tribe’s families, Johnny and Lisa Bonta, in Fernley, Nevada in late May.

Dressing Up Native: Just Don't Do It
jhameia:
“Dressing up as ‘a Native American’ furthers the already popular notion that they aren’t real, diverse, complex human beings. There’s a reason that dressing up as a white guy isn’t nearly as effective on Halloween; there’s no homogenous vision of what White Guy looks like. If you’ve developed a homogenous vision of a particular race, enough that you could conceive of a good costume, then...

I made my abusive husband leave because it finally got undeniably physical, but am still dependent on him to pay rent and bills until I can get more freelance work. he keeps using how broke we are as an excuse for why I should let him stay in the home with me and the kids until he gets better, instead of making him leave until he does. So I’m begging for help from strangers on the...

Congrats! Migraines are no joke - my partner’s on prescription meds for when they hit. Before then he could be laid out for up to a week.
Unfortunately, I had to go off the prescription med that I was taking, Maxalt (which you’re supposed to take RIGHT when the migraine STARTS to hit, which was always pretty...
Re: My sudden interest in food safety
Yes, I’m pregnant. Only about 8.5 weeks along, so bad shit could still happen, but we saw a very good heartbeat on the ultrasound last week, which is a good sign. Still not going to announce it on Facebook until after my next OB appointment at least (~2 weeks from now).
I have horrible nausea and it looks like I am NOT one of those migraine sufferers whose migraines disappear during...

If it’s the toxin it’s made out to be why is one of our primary chemical receptors in the tongue designed to seek it out?
Well, if you don’t get enough of it, you can die. This is true for some things that can also kill you (see: water), but salt gets a bad rap mainly because of old, discredited...
balancefit replied to your post:
Actually salt can be quite harmful. If you overingest sodium it unbalances your potassium levels in the blood stream. This causes electrolytes to be unstable and harms the blood pressure. High sodium intakes can damage anyone regardless of genetics.
As I think I just stated, this isn’t true.

deli meat it bad for you period. shouldn’t be eating it. if you want meat in your sandwhich cook and cut it yourself. Luncheon meat is horrible for your arteries, sodium levels and heart.

One of the books I read during my first pregnancy (I think it was What to Expect?) said you should always heat LUNCHMEAT to STEAMING before you eat it… yeah I didn’t do that either. Maybe it’s because of pregnancy lowering your immune system?
The deli meat steaming is to neutralize listeria risk. Listeria is...

I asked a nurse, and she couldn’t answer either. I call BS on it, frankly. With a lot of those advisories I went looking for positive evidence of harm rather than evidence of safety.
Word. That’s my general standard, too… and funnily enough, it allows for moderate alcohol consumption.
rhymeswithnothing replied to your post: Why can’t we just have SCIENCE?
This makes me think of other pregnancy myths that get spread around without any hard evidence (usually untrue anyway). All I can find is that UNCOOKED fish is bad, which, well yeah.
But why? I’m talking about uncooked fish—flash-frozen, uncooked fish. There’s no available evidence that it’s...

Why can't we just have SCIENCE?
Okay, so I’ve been on PubMed for an hour, and I cannot find any actual evidence that raw fish is a particularly risky food for pregnancy. It’s not likely to be contaminated with listeria, and flash freezing (which is required for sushi-grade fish by the USDA) kills parasites. Some fish do have higher mercury levels, but the general recommendation for pregnant people is not to exceed...

Dear dude with a bisexual wife:
Shut the fuck up.
No, I don’t actually care what you think, from your perspective as a mansplaining d-bag, about how bisexual people are perceived by the “external world.” The fact that you describe said world as not only “external” but also “objective” alone should render any explanation as to why not completely...

Random fact about me #1
I have incredibly dark, thick eyelashes. I inherited them from my father, whose older sisters, when they were all kids, used to call him “Alice Eyelash” (his name is Allen).
When I was in high school or college, we (my two sisters and I) found an old black and white photo of a really gorgeous young person with long dark curls and big eyes with dark lashes. We spent about five...
